Having grown up in an Italian family there are many traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. One that I seem to really enjoy is making Pizzelles. These are cookies made with a gazillion eggs, butter and sugar , which are then pressed in a pizzelle maker to make a snowflake like pattern.
Each year I make them for the Christmas season and each year my house fills with the smells of anise. Everytime I smell this aroma it reminds me of one person - my Nonna. The first time I made these cookies after Nonna had passed away I broke down and cried. The aroma brought out such strong and powerful memories of her. When I make them now I don't get so emotional , but I still spend most of the time thinking of her while I make them.
