After many years of watching the Remembrance day ceremonies on television, this year we decided to go to the cenataph in Fort Langley and take in the ceremony. It was held at the cenataph located in the graveyard and what an emotional experience it was. From the procession of the Veterans to the RCMP in their red serge, to hearing the bagpipes play their lonely tunes it was all such an amazing site. The experience was made even more sureal when the Fraser Blues flew their 5 aircraft planes right over top in such perfect precision! And what finally got me was the lone singer who sang Amazing Grace. Wow! I'm so glad that I finally made the time to go and experience this ceremony and remember all those soldiers who died (did you know that 65,000 Canadian soldiers died in WW1 and 45,000 in WW2!!) and those who are currently still fighting. May we never forget!!!
This was the first year that my 9 year old daughter went to the Remembrance Day ceremonies. After attending she wrote an essay. I think it speaks volumes about what she was feeling today at the ceremony.
My Wish for Peace - By Kaitlyn (9 yrs old)
I am going to tell you my wish for peace during war. My wish for peace is that there would be peace on earth. Everyone should stop fighting because where they have war think about those people that have to watch everyone fight.
They are just little kids that could get hurt. I am very thankful for those people that fight in war and when somebody dies from war I feel bad because they stood up for us and we didn't do anything about it we just listened to it on TV or in the paper or on the radio. They would give up their lives for us. It's sad and it should stop. Think about those people in war and what they are doing for us. I feel very bad all because of those people who are in war are taken away from their families.
Just think if your mom or dad fought in the war when you were little. Would you be sad maybe even angry? I know I would be. Just thinking about it is sad. Why are people trying to attack our country. Who ever is reading this just think war is going on right now. We give the people who fight in the war a day or our time (Remembrance Day) they give us their lives.
At the same time I'm sad about this but I'm still happy and grateful that they do this for us. If they didn't have war our country (and Canada) would be ruined. The plants, nature and even us. All of us. I might not have even been alive because of war. I am angry with the people that are trying to hurt our land.
Remembering the soldiers that dies for us is all that people think we can do but that is not true. We can all at least celebrate remembrance day and care for the people in the war like they do for us.
